Solar Tracking

Solar Tracking

In order to efficiently harness energy produce by the sun, PV panels, reflectors, lenses and other solar capturing devises need to be properly oriented. As the seasons change, along with the suns position in the sky, solar trackers are used to maximize exposure to solar radiation and increase the productivity of the entire system.

There are two general classifications of solar trackers, single axis and dual axis. Single axis tracking systems employ either a horizontal or vertical rotating axis to position the units. Dual axis systems on the other hand, combine the horizontal and vertical axises, which allow for unlimited orientation capabilities.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) provides sun tracking algorithms which can be used to set precise, location based coordinates to accurately follow the position of the sun.
